The Desert of Rust
Location: Central Australia
Features:
The Australian Desert of Rust lies in the center of the technopolitical continent, and spans almost 200 miles in diameter. To call this area a wasteland is an insult to wastelands: the sands are so intermixed with metallic waste and detrius that it has been tainted. It is literally rusted ground. Constant storms kick up these vile metallic flecks and sand into the air, blanketing the whole region in almost perpetual obscurity. No normal, healthy life lives here. The Australian wildlife was long ago moved further outward, if not directly transplanted into specialized arcopoli fully. The creatures that inhabit this region are abhorrent abberations that sktter and slither around as they hide from the scouring rust storms.
Scattered throught the desert are various wrecks, dumps and abandoned, nonfunctional technology. Australia has long been critisized for allowing the Desert to form, but so far all that can be done for the pollution is to contain it, using a network of atmospheric converters ringed around the continent to ensure that the toxic fumes don't damage the ozone layer.
Rumored to be at the center of this infamous blemish is the derelict remains of the original Poseidos mobile fortress, abandoned and dead. Tales of it's massive bulk rising like a spectre from the rusted sands have been reported in Australia for decades now, but none have ever been able to pinpoint it. The sheer amount of metals, noxious fumes, and radiation hotspots have made scans impossible and prolonged exploration unfeasible.
If there ever were a "king" of deserts, the Desert of Rust would proudly bear that lonesome title.
