Pacific Ocean- Mariana Trench, 2:30 pm
Water bubbled up as something emerged from the depths of the sea, a giant mass of dark rock-like material. Remnants of powerful winds that had pushed a massive hurricane system inland a few days prior tossed salt water upon the mass, washing away attached seaweed and loose dirt.
A short distance away a small boat approached the thing at a slow, steady pace. Onboard, a father and son stared out at the structure as the father recalled the research he had done. Similar masses, or perhaps the same one had been reported around the globe in the last two weeks, first off the coast of Australia, then in the Aegean Sea near what had once been Greece, and now here, vanishing each time before the military or researchers could get near enough. In each case local population centers went on high alert, the ruling powers telling their citizens they believed the mass to be the result of recent tectonic plate activity, a new island. However, in each case the military was put on high alert, anti-kaiju weaponry prepared and on standby for every time the mass appeared children began having vivid life-like dreams. All around the location children started speaking of demons and monsters, drawing apocalyptic sketches of horrendous battles in which the beasts are facing something, most often something resembling a shadowy mass that rises from the ocean.
Just being out in these waters was dangerous. The military would be out here any minute, the father likely jailed for this action, but he was desperate to find the answer and end the dreams his son was having. Though his son always awoke happy and feeling safe, he didn’t like some unnatural event taking place within his home, affecting his son in any way be it for better or ill. Even now he could hear the voice of the military captain rushing to intercept them, calling for him to turn back and power down the boat. Ignoring them he pushed on, vowing to end what he didn’t understand.
Moving alongside the mass, close enough to reach out and touch the thing he allowed reached out, tapping the rocky formation. Nothing happened. Then his son, wriggling his way through a guardrail, reached for a smaller part of it, laughing as if he were petting a puppy. Suddenly, the “mass” moved, shifting slightly and opening a large green eye opened. Falling backwards as he screamed the father couldn’t fathom why his son was laughing and smiling as if Christmas had come early.
Rising, the creature first revealed hits head, terrapin-like in appearance save for the tusks curving up from its lower jaw. A thunderous rumbling sound shook the area, deafening the man as he stared in terror at the turtle thing rose higher out of the water, loose gravel falling from its back. Almost airborne now the father’s jaw dropped for he could have sworn the creature smiled at his son before rocketing into the sky like a spinning top, jets of blue-white flame trailing behind it like a living comet.
The captain of the military vessel stood in awe as well, instantly recognizing the creature. He had seen the creature through holographic videos back when he was a private, the image of a creature that had saved them all at the expense of its own life permanently burned into his memory. Raising a hand he saluted the turtle that was now not even a dot in the distance.
“Welcome back Gamera,” he said with a smile. “We’ve missed ya.”
